He managed to get a considerable amount of work done into the bargain: one of his first tasks was to dramatise Bulwer Litton's novel Zanoni, a work first published in 1842 and showing its author's preoccupation with and love for the mysterious: Delius started to write incidental music for it, feeling that it did not lend itself to full operatic treatment.

An autograph draft piano score of incidental music for this projected dramataized version of Bulwer Litton's romance Zanoni (1842) is in the Delius Trust Archive. On 1 June Sinding had enquired, 'Have you got a text for an opera?'
